Vestibular Evaluation

BAN_2_ENG

Videonystagmography (VNG) or Electronystagmography (ENG)  is a battery of tests that examines the cause of imbalance, dizziness, or other balance disorders by evaluating the function of the inner ear.  During this test, goggles are placed around the eyes to record eye movements. (Please note: if you wear eye makeup, it will need to be removed in order to obtain reliable results.) VNG testing is only done at our Lake Boone Trail location.

The test consists of three parts and takes approximately two hours to complete. During the first part of the test, the patient is asked to track lights on a lighted bar. Then, the patient is moved into different head and body postions. Finally, the patient’s ears are irrigated with cool and warm air. This process allows audiologists to measure involuntary back-and-forth eye movements called nystagmus. The cooling and warming effect of the air may cause a few minutes of dizziness.

Because certain medications may change the results of an VNG exam, we ask that you refrain from taking any non-essential medications for 48 hours before your appointment time. If you have any questions about the medications you should or should not take before your exam, please speak with your physician and we will be happy to provide any clarification.
